In the Second Edition of ASCO-SEP, 2010, page 112, one can read:

“The incidence of breast cancer is 12% lower in African-American women than in white women (118 versus 131 per 100,000 women in the population). But the mortality is 38% higher among African-American women (34 versus 24 per 100,000 women).”

The increased mortality is linked to:
1. Late diagnosis
2. Difference in access to needed care
3. Unfavorable biologic characteristics of breast cancer in African-American women (ER negative + poorly differentiated tumors, basal-like subtype of tumor histopathology).

This statement points to an anomaly:

“African-American women are dying more by the thousands every year for something we can do something about since we know what the problems are”.

“African-American women are needlessly dying by the thousands, while our governing authorities are distracted and not focusing on these dramatic deaths.”

A new intervention plan needs to be designed to reverse the mortality in African-American women. The resources to achieve this objective are available, a focused coordination is however warranted.

1. Many organizations already exist in the fight against breast cancer
2. Radiologic means are already here today for better detection of breast cancer
3. The Human genome is decoded
4. Advances in the detection of molecular abnormalities have been impressive

What is missing today is a better nationwide coordinated effort to use these resources to correct a well documented abnormality in our society, an abnormality which leads to thousands of deaths, needlessly being witnessed in the African-American community.

The Coalition has submitted a grant request to CPRIT (Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas). This was a complicated process. Progress is not easy, the battle is on.
No promise, no sure thing, but until you dance to the tunes, you can't win. For African American women who die from breast cancer every year, we will continue to fight until our message is received...

One thing is for certain, the minority feels that its opinion and existence seem to not matter, and whatever they are trying to achieve for their own survival is never enough in the eye of the majority. What the majority does not realize is that by intervening sooner in the expansion of the minority, it misses a chance to shape it. The majority needs the minority because in a democratic society the true answer does not necessarily comes from one side. The minority views the problem or challenge from a stand point that is different, and may be right sometimes.

The Coalition welcome the announcement by The Texas Medical Board that our Medical license has been approved and will be issued July 2nd 2012, The Oncology Clinic will therefore be open September first 2012. This is a major development in the life of our Coalition, the fight continues.

The CRBCM and the Greater East Cancer center
will partner to provide cancer treatment and health promotion initiatives to benefit the people of El Paso Texas.
We continue in our efforts to complete health promotion research and cancer prevention. We believe that such partnership will offer all aspects of cancer prevention (Primary, secondary and tertiary prevention) and will create jobs in El Paso. Support us by writing to drkcancerclinic@gmail.com.

Once again, CPRIT did it!
funding mostly university based programs in few cities of this great state. Our representatives stay silent.
Observers have now concluded that CPRIT is an exclusive university Bank. Small businesses that could be developed and shaped to become true contenders in cancer research are pushed aside. Their applications "administratively withdrawn". Gap in disparities for minority owned small companies continue to widen. The end result is richer universities. Until there is a change in leadership or thinking at CPRIT, we will see the same dance each year.

Yesterday 3:11 AM - Public
CPRIT has released new grants for 114 Millions. Most of these grants went to University based institutions in same cities. Although there is a legitimate concern that government money be spent without waste, observers are raising growing concerns that the institution has opted to become source of exclusive university resources. It is unclear whether this was the intention of the legislature to create an exclusive source for university funding. If that was the intention, the legislature should have named this appropriately. By limiting its pool of beneficiaries, it is unclear whether the full impact of the institution will be achieved within the 10 years. Certainly the secondary intention which was to create jobs around Texas will be missed. The end result will be mostly richer universities. How well the institution meets disparities in the distribution of resources is also unclear. Small institutions, minority owned companies and newer companies are globally dismissed from participation. These companies are viewed as "risky" rather than an "opportunity" to be created and shaped. A bolder leadership might be needed. If CPRIT continue in this path, a club mentality will result. Certainly, the focus on funding only university based or "blessed" programs has already skewed the selection of awards. Keeping universities happy seems to be the emphasis despite the widely recognized notion that this nation economy is based on small businesses. Representatives of small communities such as El Paso are not demanding better redistribution of the scarce government resources and appear complice and condoning CPRIT behavior. Applications from small institutions or "profiled" institutions are mostly "administratively withdrawn" to discourage new applicants. This is the reason why only less than 100 companies apply at each round of application in this great state of Texas. The majority of applications that are funded are once again a handful of Universities at each annual cycle/dance.
By writing the CRBCM will be targeted and removed from the competition for sure. "What the heck", it is not a University after all.

please be advised that we received preliminary good news from the CPRIT front, our research proposal has been retained and is under peer review. We remain hopeful that our cause will deserve the committee attention. We cross our fingers. November is final decision time. In the meantime, the organization continues its development activities. We are currently working on further submission to CPRIT.

The CRBCM has conducted a small Breast cancer risk factor assessment among Survivors and current patients in El Paso TX. We will release those findings soon. Although this was a small study, it seems important because the population involved was made of people with great interest and particular knowledge of Breast Cancer.

Peggy Kankonde said...

The CRBCM has been surprised by the people of El Paso participation to the Pilot program. People completed 22 pages of questionaires covering physical activity level, nutrition, smoking cessation and assessment of Breast cancer risks. We have our work cut out. A surprising 160 surveys to review and analyze in one setting. Just imagine how many will be reached if this occurred in 4 malls rather than one, and on a daily basis for 1 month...
CPRIT needs to do something!

Had an interesting meeting with regional leaders of the American Cancer Society, they support El Paso. which is the 6th City in Texas. Will support us in our endeavors! That's definitely a plus. We are now working to get UTEP more involved in Research to attract CPRIT funding!

Good news, we have been granted privileges at University Medical Center of El Paso. Today time for a picture, a badge and training for Computer readiness. The Greater East cancer Center is in play. Will tease the System there and implement activities for the Coalition (CRBCM).
Let's go to work!

Now we are still in Houston, TX. continuing field work for a 3rd party. We will continue this field work acquiring field investigation experience. With our chances with CPRIT dwindling given the fact that we have been profiled, we have to start looking beyond this organization. Our cause is too important to entangle it to one source of funding. With continuous support of current "employer" and increasing "census" at our clinic, there will be way to survive the unfriendly storm, we see the light, the future is bright. With the current work, will bridge the gap and keep alive. When the cause is just, things will fall into place, will live another day, and push forward. We will resume work in Houston Nov 26, for an additional 2 weeks. CRBCM expansion seems promising...no matter what.
